A TRIO of pensioners from Cupar are still on cloud nine after sharing almost £1 million in the People’s Postcode Lottery on Saturday.

The neighbours, who live in Blalowan Gardens, were each handed a cheque for £333,333 at a glittering event in the town’s Corn Exchange after their postcode - KY15 5EL - scooped the jackpot in the Summer Millions Draw.

There were emotional scenes as Kathleen Todd (77), Margaret Nelson (68) and Bob Marshall (72) were presented with their life-changing winnings - with everyone agreed that there could hardly be more worthy recipients.

Kathleen, Cupar’s Citizen of the Year in 2010 for her work with Adamson Hospital League of Friends, told the Fife Herald afterwards that her first thought was that the win would mean she wouldn’t have to fret about the cost of her imminent house move!

“I’m moving into sheltered housing in Bathgate Court in a few days and had been worrying about the expense involved,” she said.

“I just can’t believe it. I can’t take it in.”

Kathleen said she also planned to treat herself to a new automatic car so that she can visit her son Ewan and daughter-in-law Hayley in Arbroath, themselves in the process of moving house along with their two teenage foster children.

A new car is on the shopping list too for former RAF man Bob, who plans to replace his 11-year-old Honda Civic.

But his biggest priority is spoiling his four grandchildren - son Rab’s three daughters, aged 13, 11, and four-and-half, who live in Edinburgh, and his son David’s wee boy Jake, two-and-a-half, who lives in Elgin.

His sentiments were shared by Margaret, a former nursing assistant at Stratheden Hospital, who said: “My lovely family will all benefit from this.”

Still trembling with disbelief, she told the Fife Herald that she would probably treat herself and husband John to a new car, but mostly she intended to spoil her sons David and John, daughter Gillian and their families.

The once-in-a-lifetime experience of opening Margaret’s golden envelope fell to the eldest of her four grandchildren, Clarke (20), who’s due to become a father for the second time today (Friday).

He took to the stage on Margaret’s behalf, telling the audience that he was ‘an excellent grandson’!
