Customers blast Aldi over charges

Local Aldi shoppers have blasted the store after they were charged twice for their purchases.

Several Levenmouth residents who paid using the chip and pin machines at the store - which only opened in the town last year - had their payments taken twice, some for up to as much as £140.

However, the supermarket chain said that it was aware of the problem, which had affected a number of stores in regions all over the country, and would be refunding all of the money to customers.

Alan Penman (45) who lives at Mountfleurie, said he visits the supermarket nearly every day, but didn’t notice until last Thursday that he had been charged twice, leaving him £140 out of pocket.

“Because it was £140.82, it put me into minus in my account - I don’t have an overdraft - and even though my wages were coming in that same day, I still had to speak to the bank.”

Alan has since been to the Windygates Road store to complain, and was told his money would be refunded, but he is still waiting on one of eight refunds.

“I’ll never use Switch there again,” he added.

Kay Rooney, (40), from Buckhaven had an extra £127 taken out of her account, also on March 27. After realising the mistake, she put in a dispute with the Bank of Scotland who refunded the money.

She said: “The worrying thing is, how can they take this money out of your account if you haven’t even put in your pin? It’s meant to be a secure payment system.”

Further along the coast in St Monans, mum of three Mhairi Wishart was also hit by the error.

She had her weekly shop of £81.37 taken out of her account twice, and was left unable to buy clothes for her children.

“I’ve spoken to my bank and they said they can’t do anything. I’ve just got to wait. I have direct debits coming off soon, so I’m hoping it comes in soon or else I’ll get charged.”

A spokesman for Aldi said: “We experienced technical difficulties at some of our stores between the March 18-24, and some customers using debit cards have been charged twice.

“The matter was notified to us on March 26 and all affected transactions have been identified were refunded on the same day. We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused our customers.”

Advice from Fife’s Trading Standards department

Geoff Bates from Fife Trading Standards advised those affected to immediately contact the store who could put them in touch with head office. “A big company like this has measures in place, but the refunds will most likely have to come from head office.” He also advised anyone who had incurred charges for overdraft or missed payments to speak to their bank about redress.
