Cyclists find safer route to Larder

Cyclists looking to avoid using the A91 as they leave St Andrews have managed to remove one obstacle that was obscuring their path - for now.
Donald and Susan Sinclair prefer to use the Old Station Road and a cycle path to reach the Balgove Larder rather than having to ride along the A91 where some cars rapidly pick up speed on leaving the Petheram Bridge roundabout.
The only obstacle to them reaching the Balgove Larder by bike was a padlocked gate at the side of the A91 which belongs to the Links Trust.
The couple contacted local councillor Frances Melville who in turn spoke to the Links Trust who were able to create a gap at the gate wide enough to allow a bike to pushed through.
“The main problem is that the A91 is a busy road, and vehicles typically get up to the speed limit soon after leaving the roundabout, so we are not keen to cycle along it,” Donald Sinclair explained.
“Living at Canongate, we enjoy cycling through the town centre then down to the golf course before heading out of town.
“We prefer to use the quieter Old Station Road, which leads to a splendid cycle path that goes past the entrance to the Balgove Larder, on the opposite side of the A91.
“Unfortunately we could not get across using the cycle path because the relevant gate was padlocked.
Installing a gap at the gate is an excellent solution which is both effective and low cost.”
But the issue of cyclists and pedestrians crossing the A91 is currently being looked at by Fife Council’s road safety and traffic management department.
In addition to the crossing at the Balgove Larder, there are other points along the cyclepath to Guardbridge that are used to cross the busy A91.
Colin Stirling, road safety and traffic management lead officer, said he will arrange for the crossing at the Balgove Larder to be formally assessed for road safety following the formation of the gap for cyclists to use.
The assessment will involve checking visibility, traffic speeds and road alignment. The outcome of the assessment will be made available to the elected local members in due course.”
