Daan was the man for St Andrews Links Trophy
Dutch golfer Daan Huizing left the trailing pack well behind when he won the St Andrews Links Trophy in record style at the weekend.
The 21-year-old student at Utrecht University completely shattered the previous tournament record by nine shots in posting a 23-under par total of 264 over the New and Old Courses.
His feat saw his named etched into the record books as only the second overseas winner in the 24 years that the tournament has been played.
His opening six-under par round of 65 over the New Course in the cold blustery conditions was followed by sub-par rounds of 64, 68 and 67 over the championship layout of the Old Course to leave him 14 shots clear of the chasing pack.
After accepting the Trophy from Euan Loudon, chief executive of St Andrews Links Trust, he said: “This year I have been working hard on my course management and distance control, especially in the wind, and this has paid dividends - particularly on the first day’s play on the New Course when conditions were tough.
“Over the four rounds, I didn’t make too many mistakes although I felt a bit silly when I went into the Swilcan Burn with my second shot to the first green in each of my last two rounds. However, overall, my putting was solid and I holed my fair share of long ones.
”The Links Trophy has been great preparation for the Amateur Championship that starts at Royal Troon in just over a week and I hope that the course there is in as good condition as the courses here at St Andrews.”
The runner-up wasa 2009 tournament winner, Alan Dunbar, the 22-year-old from Rathmore in Northern Ireland after posting a 72-hole total of 278. Glenbervie’s Graeme Robertson shot a final round of 64 to take third place on 279.
