Disorder and drinking remains an issue

THE community of Buckhaven raised its concerns about youth disorder and people drinking in public at the latest local community engagement meeting.
In 2011, young people drinking in public and groups of youths hanging about, which was perceived as intimidating behaviour, was what the residents in Buckhaven wanted their local community officers to deal with.
PCs Matthew Spencer and Kai Plentz looked at the concerns and approached the Twilight Basketball Initiative, the Kinetic Team and detached youth workers to provide the area with activities for young people.
A series of talks was also given to pupils at the local schools to highlight how Buckhaven residents perceived some of their on-going behaviour.
Police also had officers cycling round the town as well as an increased number of officers patrolling the streets at night and at weekends, using staff from operation LASER when available.
Throughout the year, progress updates were feedback to the residents at the community engagement meeting.
A year on, residents who attended the community engagement meetings have said they feel anti-social behaviour in the area is steadily decreasing.
Residents Keith Edwards and Ken McGarrity said: “Through the local meetings, we can highlight our concerns and feel we have more ownership of what police officers look at.”
Sgt Jim Davenport, Buckhaven and Wemyss Villages, said: “We closely work with our community to resolve the issues set in the community engagement priority in consultation and alongside appropriate partners and agencies.”
