Dog walker spent nine hours stuck on ledge

A terrified woman dog walker has been rescued after spending nine hours stuck on a ledge 60 feet down a ravine at an East Neuk country estate.

The 58-year-old local woman had slipped in the wet, muddy conditions on Wednesday afternoon as she chased her dog which had run off ahead of her.

The woman, who is not being named by Fife Police, tumbled down the ravine at Cambo, near Kingsbarns, and was found shortly before 10.30pm last night by firemen using heat seeking equipment.

The Forth District Coastguard at the 24-hour maritime rescue base at Fife Ness, Crail, was called to assist police after the woman was reported missing by her father.

She was eventually located down the ravine about 300 metres along a farm track and lifted out by St Andrews and Leven rope rescue coastguard teams at about midnight. Her female Labrador dog was rescued 10 minutes later.

A coastguard spokesman said her pet was a former guide dog which had been trained not to bark, so was “no help” in attracting attention to the stranded owner, but she stayed with her until she was rescued.

The woman was unhurt, but an ambulance took her to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, to be checked over by medical staff.
