WORK to begin dismantling the Burntisland clock tower started last Sunday as the weather vane and top stone were removed by crane.
WORK to begin dismantling the Burntisland clock tower started on Sunday as the weather vane and top stone were removed by crane.
Recently, it was discovered there was extensive damage to the tower and work to remove the affected stone has to be carried out.
The tower will be partially dismantled to just below the clock faces and then a temporary roof will be put in place to weatherproof the tower.
It will then be reconstructed using as much of the original stone as possible.
In addition, the clock mechanism has been removed to keep it safe during the works.
A crane is situated on the south lane of the High Street and three way traffic control has been put in place to allow traffic to flow.
The crane and traffic control will only be used on an occasional basis, so there should be limited disruption to traffic.
While the tower is being dismantled the Burgh Chambers and Local Office will be closed. But locals can access services from the library, from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
After dismantling works are completed a temporary roof will be built and then scaffolding removed, while plans are finalised for its reconstruction.
The work is expected to take a number of weeks.
