Esteemed Balcarres horse trial is scrapped

The Balcarres event has been cancelled for 2013.

The Balcarres event has been cancelled for 2013.

An INTERNATIONAL equestrian event held for the first time at Balcarres in June has been scrapped from next year’s calendar, as it caused too much damage to the owner’s estate.

Lady Balniel of Balcarres Estate, near Colinsburgh, made the announcement regarding the Balcarres International Horse Trials, which had been deemed Scotland’s “newest most exciting three day event”.

She said: “We had a fantastic time running the event at short notice and we believe the horse trials were a success.

“Unfortunately, we were totally undone by the weather and these conditions have had such an impact on the estate that it is with deep regret we have had to take this decision.”

The event, which ran this year from June 14-17, put the area on the map by attracting leading riders from Britain and abroad, as well as many influential UK businesses, while supporting events raised money for charity.

It was, however, plagued by prolonged rain, leaving much of the grounds resembling a mudbath and forcing the cancellation of some events for safety reasons.

Organisers did declare it a success, though, and straight away arranged for it to take place next year on June 13-16.

However, after surveying the damage, it seems the estate owners have changed their minds.

Despite the bad news, organiser James Oaken, a Fife farmer, remained diplomatic, saying: “Due to unforeseen encounters this season, the event is unable to run.

“Thank you to Lord and Lady Balniel for hosting the horse trials and to the organising team, sponsors and helpers for contributing so much to the event.

“We are sorry the weather beat us.”
