Exhibition marks 100 years since Highland Show came to Cupar

IN July 1912, Cupar hosted the Highland Show on the only occasion it visited Fife.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of this historic event, Cupar Heritage Centre is staging a special exhibition telling the story of how the show came to be held in north east Fife, the personalities involved, how it was threatened by an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, and its eventual success.
The exhibition features contemporary photographs, many from private collections, as well as material from the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society, newspaper reports about the show, catalogues of livestock and prizewinners, lists of agricultural equipment and exhibitors, and small artefacts including a prizewinner’s medal from 1912.
The Highland Show was held over four days between July 9 and 12, 1912, and the town took on a festive air with crowds coming by train, horse and car.
Entertainment was laid on for visitors, including special performances by Cupar Amateur Opera at the Union Hall and a concert for herdsmen and exhibitors.
The exhibition at Cupar Heritage Centre — situated in the former stationmaster’s house at Cupar railway station — will be open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons until September 30.
