Exiled Raith fans organise second dinner
following the huge success of last year’s Frank Connor tribute evening, Raith Rovers supporters group Rovers Down South have organised another glittering event.
This year the group are paying tribute to the promotion winning squad of 1966/67, and many of the stars of the side have agreed to attend and organiser Bill Gilby is sure that it will be another evening to remember
“Last year’s was a great success, raised a lot of money for the club, and we wanted to follow on from that,” he said.
All money raised will go towards Rovers’ under 15s/16s side who are sponsored by RDS.
Some of the names who have confirmed they’ll be in attendance include, Frank Burrows, Tommy Hislop, Alan Miller, Jocky Richardson, Ian Lourie, Davie Weir, Brian Cooper, Paddy Wilson, Mike Judge and Colin Sinclair.
Another familiar face will be Gordon Wallace, top scorer in that promotion-winning year, which was clinched with a 7-2 home victory over Queen of the South. He said: “I’ve been at Rovers three times and loved it.
“When I first signed in 1966 I was at Montrose and when George Farm came to sign me it was the first chance I’d had of joining a team that was going somewhere.
“In my first season we got promotion and then we went full-time for the following year and that was probably my very best one as a player when I got voted Player of the Year.”
Gordon’s 27 goals that season helped Rovers stay up but eventually he left to sign for Dundee in 1969.
He would return to the club as a player in 1978, then after a short spell as coach took over as manager the following year.
He now coaches youths at Dundee and says he’s looking forward to the reunion night. “It’ll be nice to see a lot of faces that you haven’t seen for a number of years,” he said.
‘‘I’m very fond of Raith Rovers. They were the first team to offer me full-time football, the first to offer me a coaching role, and the first team to let me try management.
“They’ve been very good to me.”
