One 180 dancers of all ages are getting set to take part in an explosive dance show in St Andrews.
Madras Community Dance School’s ‘Retro Explosion’ will see routines in Highland, tap and ballet and will feature music from The Spice Girls and Madonna, as well as some Disney classics and favourites from well-known musicals.
Spokesperson Anne McGrory said: “The senior dancers will open the show with a really glamourous ‘Dancing Fool’ number while the nursery class is on a ‘Rollercoaster’.
“All of the girls and four boys have been rehearsing since January and are eager to perform. They really enjoy learning routines to their favourite current music and being fitted for costumes. It really is an exciting time for them and great for their families to see what they have learned and how confident they have become.”
Anne added: “The ladies of the adult tap are taking to the stage again to perform to Robbie Williams.”
Community classes began 20 years ago with only eight girls and one teacher. Now, the school has grown to 180 dancers and five teachers involved in running classes six days of the week. Hip hop and cheer-leading have also been added to the syllabus as well.
Anne explained that the committee has raised thousands of pounds over the years with bag packing events, selling cake candy and staging sponsored classes. They have also been awarded grants to buy portable dance mirrors, flooring for the stage and ballet barres.
The show takes place at Madras Kilrymont on Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14, at 7.00 p.m.
