Extra spaces coming at Kirkcaldy hospital

PLANS to provide additional car parking at Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital look set to be complete in the coming months.

Members of NHS Fife’s operational division committee heard at their meeting yesterday (Wednesday) that work is progressing well on extra parking around the hospital.

The news will be a welcome relief to those living in neighbouring streets who have seen patients and visitors parking outside their homes since the new wing of the hospital opened earlier this year.

Dave Stewart, chairman, said this week: “The permanent link bridge (linking the old and new wings) is ahead of schedule and we anticipate that to be finished earlier than June 15 which will allow ground work to be completed and free up some additional car parking.”

He said 160 additional spaces are also expected to be completed towards the end of July at the top of Whytemans Brae.

There will also be additional capacity available before the end of August when the car parking is completed in the area currently occupied by Consort’s contractors south of the new laboratories.

Extra spaces

Mr Stewart said he hopes the additional spaces, when they are complete, will help resolve the problems of people parking outwith marked bays, on grass verges and pavements.

He also said barriers on the pavements around the Lauder Road car parks may also have to be considered.

“Once we have completed the car parking people will have less of an excuse - not that they have an excuse at the moment, for parking on the grass as they do at the moment.

“We need to do something for the residents in Yetholme Way who have been extremely tolerant and helpful towards us especially when traffic is parking on the single lines there for longer than they should.

“I’d like them to know we’re aware of the issue and will do what we can to help them.

“I think barriers might be the only answer.”
