Falkland hairdressers on the run for cot death charity

A FUND-RAISING campaign launched by a young Falkland mother who lost her baby daughter to cot death has touched the hearts of local people.

Donations to the Scottish Cot Death Trust have been flooding in since the Fife Herald featured the heartbreaking story of Joanna Reekie (23), whose six week-old baby died inexplicably in November 2007.

Though she will never recover from the tragedy, Joanna wants something positive to come from her little girl's death and is channelling her energy into raising awareness about the charity she says was an invaluable source of support during her darkest days.

Now two Falkland hairdressers are to swap their rollers for running shoes in a bid to give the trust a further boost.

Scott Robb and Alex Thaddells of Scott Robb Hairdressing are in training for the BUPA 10k challenge in Edinburgh on May 3 to raise funds for vital research into the terrible syndrome that claims the lives of around 300 apparently healthy babies every year.

Scott and Alex already knew Joanna through her younger sister Lauren, who used to work in the salon and who's expecting her first baby in May.

Scott said: "We were deeply saddened by Joanna's loss and we wanted to do our bit to raise funds for the trust as it's a very important charity that doesn't get the publicity it deserves."

The Scottish Cot Death Trust is the only Scottish charity dedicated to raising awareness of cot death.

It receives less than three per cent of its annual income from the government and relies almost totally on public donations.

The charity's community fund-raiser Lynne Mackenzie said: "We are delighted that Joanna and her local community are supporting the Scottish Cot Death Trust by getting involved with lots of fund-raising.

"Their support and valuable donations really will help us make a difference to many families throughout Scotland.

"We desperately need people like Joanna to raise money and join our fight against cot death in Scotland. We cannot thank her enough."
