Family hopeful of NHS funding
THE family of a Kennoway youngster who is hoping to be given ground-breaking medical treatment is facing an anxious wait to see if a funding application has been approved
Reece Cameron was diagnosed with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy when he was 18 months old, a condition which forces his muscles to tighten.
This means the nine-year-old has to walk on his tip-toes, which can cause him regularly to lose his balance and fall.
However, a new treatment is now being practised in Bristol which eliminates high muscle tone by cutting damaged nerves in the spine to leave the healthy ones to carry correct signals from the brain to the muscles.
If Reece could be successfully treated this way, it would allow him to walk on his flat feet for the first time.
The estimated cost of the operation and subsequent treatment is £64,000, although it’s hoped NHS Fife will contribute significantly towards the operation itself.
Reece’s mum Jillian said: “We are still not much further forward with a decision yet.
“I know everything has definitely been sent and hope we get the ‘yes’ soon.”
The NHS will not fund the physio treatment, so the family is hoping to raise cash within the community.
A series of fund-raising events has been set up to get the ball rolling with the local cash generation.
