Fellowships bestowed on college benefactors

A WORLD-famous Methil artist, the area’s biggest employer and the Trust of the family who gifted Silverburn to Leven have all been awarded fellowships from the Adam Smith Foundation.
Jack Vettriano, drinks giant Diageo and the Russell Trust received their awards at the college’s recent graduation ceremonies, in recognition of the support and contribution they have each given to the Adam Smith scholarship programme.
Vettriano, whose art scholarship was founded in 2000 and has helped 44 students, was unable to attend in person and was represented by his sister and brother-in-law, Karen and John Swan, but said he was “deeply honoured” to receive it.
He added: “It has always been a great privilege to help the students in the capacity that I do.
“I was never the best student and therefore to be elevated to such a position is astonishing.”
Diageo, which has a distillery and bottling plant in Leven, set up its scholarship in 2003 and has helped 29 students.
Richard Bedford, an operations director based at Banbeath, was delighted to receive the fellowship, presented to him by Don Munro, on behalf of the company.
He said: “It is a great honour to be awarded this fellowship.
“We may be a global company but we also feel very much part of the local economy and the community.
“Our scholarship benefits everyone – the individuals gain the experience and qualifications they need and we as a company get the chance to put something back into the community and support potential future employees.”
Fred Bowden, chair of Tullis Russell, collected the award for the Russell Trust, which is the busiest of all the scholarships and has helped 195 full-time students.
He said: “It is a privilege to receive this fellowship from The Adam Smith Foundation, which we have supported through our scholarship since 1999. We are very pleased to be able to benefit so many worthy students each year and always enjoy meeting them in person and presenting them with their awards.”
