Fife Council sets its budget

A MAJOR housing investment programme has been unveiled by Fife Council.

The local authority aims to generate investment of up to £85 million to provide more social housing.

The budget for the year from April set by the Labour-run council also sees council tax frozen, but rents will rise by around five per cent.

Children will get free swimming during the summer holidays and the Council will look at making it cheaper for people to telephone it.

There are also plans to boost town centres, create apprenticeships, support very small businesses and give more cash to the under-pressure social work service.

Labour leader Alex Rowley said the budget would be good for the people of Fife, but opposition boss, the Scottish National Party’s Peter Grant, warned of cuts hidden in the overall settlement.
