A NEW service which could help save lives is being introduced to Burntisland, Kinghorn and Aberdour.

The Community First Responder Scheme is planned to go live in October or November. It will mean that an on-call volunteer will be alerted to selected incidents at the same time as an ambulance is sent.

As a result, a few precious minutes will be gained at the time when it matters most.

So far, seven local volunteers from the Burntisland First Aid Services Trust have put their names forward to take part, after being trained locally to the required standard.

Extension

They have spent the summer topping up their skills and putting them to use at a variety of local events. Their expertise will be available as an extension of the 999 service.

In a different context, over the past few months the service has saved one life and stabilised several fractures. Over the next few weeks the Trust will be supporting events such as cycling, walking, horse-riding and ice hockey.

Anyone wanting to volunteer can do so by taking part in training, and the next course will start on Wednesday, September 26 in Burntisland. Running for 10 weeks, it is the most comprehensive course of its kind in Fife.

Advanced

Those who wish can then go on to a more advanced course which will start in January. Both courses are needed by volunteers who want to join the Community First Responder Scheme.

Alex MacDonald, chairman of Burntisland First Aid Services Trust, said: “We get excellent feedback from the courses that we run. We’re fortunate in having a strong pool of experienced trainers who can share their knowledge.

“However, it all starts with our basic course, which is a good mix of practical skills backed up by essential knowledge.”
