Fun in the sun as townsfolk enjoy Riverside Park Festival

here was an energetic start to the Riverside Park festival on Friday with a sports themed day to kick-off the three-day event.

A number of sporting events took place to coincide with the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games and a large crowd turned to take part in the sunshine.

A ‘Beat Usain Bolt’ sprint from Active Fife challenged youngsters to see who could run 100 metres in the fastest time; Doctor Bike invited people to bring their bikes along for a free health check and one of the most popular attractions of the day was a mountain bike stunt show from The Clan.

Provost of Fife Jim Leishman said that first ever festival in the park was a great success. He said: “It’s taken nine months to put this together and all the organisers and staff deserve a lot of praise.

“This festival is the first of its kind to be held here and hopefully it will show people that the park can be used in a positive way.

“All the sporting activities here today are encouraging youngsters to get running, get healthy and get fit.

“It’s super.”

Over the course of the weekend circus entertainer Alexander the Great kept the crowds entertained with card tricks and energetic tumbling and the famous Glenrothes hippos were also in attendance as well as a host of other activities.

Justine Reilly from Glenrothes took her grand-daughter Jessica to the festival. She said: “I’m really enjoying it.

“It’s good to see the park get used for something like this.”
