Future of RAF Leuchars revealed
TS EN 18/07/2011. LEUCHARS, FIFE: The front gate of RAF Leuchars air base in Fife. The UK Coalition Government has announced the withdrawal of the RAF from Leuchars as part of cuts in defence spending.
After more than a year and a half of waiting, the people of north east Fife finally found out what is to happen to the Leuchars airbase once the RAF move out in 2015.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced the outcome of the MOD’s basing review today including details of the army units that will soon be based in Leuchars.
RAF Leuchars will be handed over to the Army by 2015 with 50 RAF personnel remaining at the base to operate the runway as a relief landing ground for RAF Lossiemouth, the only airbase to remain in Scotland under the changes.
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and a batallion of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers will relocate to Leuchars from Germany.
This week’s announcement is the first time details about the army units coming to Leuchars has been confirmed.
In July 2011 Mr Hammond’s predecessor as Defence Secretary Liam Fox announced the closure of RAF Leuchars as part of the strategic defence review.
Two major units and a formation headquarters were to replace the RAF in Leuchars.
Just three months after making the closure announcement Dr Fox was forced to resign after details emerged that his former flatmate had accompanied him on trips abroad whilst he was on MOD business.
