Gas leak: pupils moved

PUPILS from Markinch Primary School had to be evacuated on Friday afternoon after a gas main outside the school was fractured by workmen carrying out road works.

Firefighters from Glenrothes fire station were called to the scene just after 3.00 p.m. following reports a JCB digger had hit the gas pipe in Markinch. They formed a cordon around the area to prevent anyone getting too close and were on standby for safety reasons while emergency engineers from Transco were called out to cap the pipe and make it safe.

A police spokesman said that school pupils and nursery school children were moved out of the school as a precautionary measure, but as it was almost school closing time many parents had already turned up to collect their children to take them home.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “We received a call at 3.11 p.m. to say that a gas main had been broken by a JCB digger. One appliance from Glenrothes attended and set up a safety cordon and was on standby with a hose jet in case it was required, which it wasn’t.”
