Give us your sports views
HUNDREDS of groups, clubs and individuals will be asked their views on the best ways to create and maintain sporting opportunities for Fife’s youngsters.
Fife Council is aiming to boost support for community clubs and volunteers who help young people get involved in sport and leisure activities.
At today’s (Thursday) executive committee meeting, councillors will be asked to agree a range of measures, including developing an online directory of local clubs and consulting on how best to bring sport to Fife’s youngsters.
It’s all part of a process to shape the future of the Council’s support for sport in the Kingdom.
Councillor Alex Rowley, leader of Fife Council said it was important to tap into a network of people and clubs already doing so much to help young people.
“There are volunteers who are already engaged with our youngsters – helping them to have fun, get fit and stay off the streets,” he said.
Recognition
“We want to give recognition to what these volunteers do by giving them a say in the future direction of our sport and leisure strategy and on how we spend the budgets for sport, leisure and young people.
“That is why we will be urging every group in Fife to sign up to our database and take part in the consultation later in the year.
“We all know it’s important for young people to get into healthy activities and to have something to occupy their leisure time, so we need to make sure we’re making the most, not only of our resources, but of the enthusiasm and dedication of the hundreds of volunteers running sport and leisure clubs.”
As well as seeking the go ahead for the community consultation and new online services, councillors will also be asked to approve an investigation by the housing, communities and local services policy advisory group into how the Council can support Fife’s network of sports and leisure facilities.
Grant Ward, head of leisure and cultural services, said: “Fife Sports Partnership will lead a review of the Fife Sports Strategy in the near future. This will be a good opportunity to involve a wider group of individuals and clubs.
“I’m looking forward to discussing the challenges and opportunities.’’
