Gold star performance by green households
LOCAL households have embraced recycling and helped Fife to top the league for recycling in Scotland.
New figures from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) show Fife households were greener than anyone else in country from October to December 2011, with more than 50 per cent of household waste recycled.
And Levenmouth residents contributed to the achievement.
Fife Council’s senior manager for sustainability, Chris Ewing, said: “It is clear that the people of Levenmouth have played a leading role in Fife gaining top spot for recycling.
“They were the third area to transfer on to the four-bin system and, although we have still to calculate the specific performance in the area since the roll out, we have no reason to believe it will be less than that being achieved in Glenrothes and north east Fife, where 65 per cent recycling is being achieved.
“Also helping is the significant use of the Recycling Centre at Steelworks Brae in Methil. Since its rebuild a few years ago, its recycling performance has improved significantly, bringing it into line with the other centre in central Fife.”
In the year to the end of March, Fife recycled more than 140,000 tonnes of waste.
“That reduced carbon emissions by 70,000 tonnes,” said Mr Ewing.
“It also had a big financial benefit, saving nearly £8 million in landfill tax and earning around £2 million from the sale of recyclates.”
“We are expecting that recycling rates will increase to 60 per cent once the bin system has been fully rolled out, resulting in even more financial and environmental benefits.”
