Fife Police officers on duty at Hyde Park during first week of Olympics

OFFICERS and staff from Fife Police have been doing their bit for the Olympic cause by assisting with the safety and security of the Games.

More than 80 were working in London during the first week of the event, with Fife providing three groups of  22 patrol officers, as well as officers with specialist skills including dog handlers, search teams and close protection officers.

In addition, one staff member of the force’s corporate communications department has been seconded to the international liaison unit, which works with security representatives of foreign governments who are in London in support of their athletes, government officials and politicians.

Temporary Chief Inspector Phil Davison led  one of the groups  which has now completed its deployment and returned to the Kingdom, having carried out a range of policing duties in and around London.

Fife officers carried out reassurance patrols in a number of London boroughs, including Westminster and Croydon, as well as working at a number of venues such as the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Park.

The patrol group led by Temporary Chief Inspector Davison was involved in policing the archery events held at Lord’s cricket ground, the triathalon in Hyde Park, and also helping to police the London Live outdoor events in the same venue.

These events attracted 100,000 people last Saturday, when giant screens and a stage were used to provide live entertainment and show television coverage of a number of events.

Chief Inspector Davison said: “I am proud of the staff who volunteered for this deployment.

“They have demonstrated the good nature of Scottish policing in helping to make the Olympic 2012 London Games a safe and successful event  to date.”
