help Kirkcaldy dig for glory
Beautiful Scotland Award presented to Kdy West in 2012
green-fingered volunteers are being sought to help Kirkcaldy bloom in the coming months.
Building on the success of the Beautiful Scotland Award presented to the Kirkcaldy West area last year, the group is now looking to extend its work throughout the town.
A new group will be created to take forward a ‘Small Cities’ application for Beautiful Scotland in summer 2013, and it is hoped that lots of locals will get on board to help make it successful.
The Silver Gilt honour, awarded to Kirkcaldy West in 2012 recognised the hard work and community pride invested by the local community.
A large number of criteria were considered - from hanging baskets on the High Street and floral improvements to the train station through to well-presented garden areas and horticultural excellence in parks.
The new group will support the good work that has already been established and build on it.
Meeting
The first meeting will be held at the offices of Kirkcaldy4All, 189a High Street, today (Thursday) at 2.00 p.m. and anyone with an interest in improving their local environment or who would like to assist, is encouraged to attend.
Scott Clelland, Fife Council’s area parks team leader, who was an integral part of the Kirkcaldy West entry last year, said: “I was struck by the passion and commitment that people in Kirkcaldy have for their communities.
‘‘The work that goes on from a number of groups including residents, the business community and voluntary groups is incredible.
“Fife Council directly supports a number of these initiatives and we would encourage everyone to come on board.”
Bill Harvey, manager of Kirkcaldy4All, added: “We were delighted to receive a silver award in the Business Improvement District category and look forward to working with other groups across Kirkcaldy.”
Yvonne Whitehill, a local resident who was involved along with many other community volunteers in helping to promote the Kirkcaldy West entry, said: “I would encourage anyone who is interested to come along and join in.
‘‘I really enjoyed being able to help make a contribution in promoting my home town. It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet and work alongside many other interesting people with a shared goal of showing Kirkcaldy at its best.”
