Waves crash on Kirkcaldy Esplanade

FIFE Council have started a public consultation on the planned improvements to Kirkcaldy sea wall.

It was built in the 1920s and although it has been effective in preventing coastal erosion along the Esplanade, it hasn’t been able to prevent large waves from coming over the top of the wall during extreme weather conditions.

And that has caused some major floods on the Esplanade over the years.

Now, work on a new sea wall is planned to begin next summer and is expected to be complete by autumn 2014.

It will be half a metre higher than the current one, and will be protected by large boulders as rock armour to break up large waves.

As well as preventing flooding and improving public safety, there will be improved beach access and several raised viewing platforms, and the existing seating and shelters will also being upgraded.

The plans are available for public viewing on the Council’s website where people can also leave commments during the consultation period which ends December 21.

There is also a public meeting taking place from 2.00 to 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21 at the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy, where council officers and engineers will be in attendance to talk about the plans.

Councillor Neil Crooks, chairman of Kirkcaldy Area Committee, said: “We are investing £9m in a new sea wall, and the results will be around for another hundred years.

‘‘It is important that we make sure local people are happy with the plans.
