The Senior Hippo's are unveiled at the launch of the Hippo Parade, Kingdom Centre, Glenrothes.

HUNDREDS of people flocked to the Kingdom Centre on Saturday for the Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade launch party.

The crowds in Lyon Square saw the work that pupils at 17 local primary schools and 15 nurseries have been doing on the hippos - fibreglass models of the town’s tardemark stone art creations - and their babies!

The theme for this year’s designs was ‘Friends From Across The World’, to tie in with the shopping centre’s ongoing link with Glenrothes Twin Town Association.

Fife Youth Radio hosted the party - which also saw the unveiling of a hippo designed by Adam Smith College students to mark this year’s 50th anniversary of the ‘Gazette’, who were presented by editor Allan Crow.

This year’s event also celebrated the work of the Scottish Children’s Hospice Association and youngsters from Rachel House in Kinross also demonstrated their own handiwork and shoppers were invited to make a donation to support the charity’s vital service.

All 35 hippos will be on display throughout the mall until August 14, with the public invited to vote for their favourite primary school and nursery school hippo via Facebook or in centre forms.

The winning primary school and nursery will each receive a great package of prizes, including £500 and a year’s sponsorship of the hippo enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo.

The parade was opened by Glenrothes councillor Fiona Grant.

It’s hoped that the event will be as great a success as last year’s, when the hippos and their creators received a received a Scottish Parliament reception.
