How does our garden grow?

WORK on a new community garden in Ravenscraig Park, Kirkcaldy is making good progress with plot holders now starting to reap their rewards.
It’s been six months since Kirkcaldy Community Gardens and Allotments (KCGA) Group officially signed the lease for the walled garden and during that time, it has not let the grass grow under its feet.
Forty-two allotments have been created with plot holders busy preparing them for the growing season.
Space has also been allocated to Greener Kirkcaldy for the development of a community orchard, and work has started clearing and preparing the site for some traditional, as well as some not so traditional, fruit and nut trees.
With funding from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund, 27 raised training beds and a polytunnel have been built as a horticultural training area for school and community groups.

A second polytunnel will also be built soon.
Anne Brown, who is a member of KCGA, said the response from local schools and community groups has been excellent with a high proportion of beds already allocated.
She said several community groups have already started working on site and schools will become involved again in the new term. The polytunnels will allow the groups to work indoors in wet weather for year round activity.
She said: “We are delighted at such positive response from schools and community groups and the further development of the training area will be driven by the youngsters themselves.
Effort
‘‘We wish to thank all those who have put in an enormous amount of effort in such a short time to get to where we are now but we still have a long way to go in our five year plan to develop the garden into a fantastic resource for Kirkcaldy and Dysart.”
An adjoining area has also been set aside for more traditional plots for the more serious and would-be gardeners amongst the community groups.
With Fife Council, KCGA has also been instrumental in the development of sites at Glamis Road and East March Street - and last month the walled garden hosted Nutshell Theatre Group’s production of ‘Allotment’ which was first presented at last year’s Edinburgh Festival.
Ravenscraig Walled Garden will be open to the public on Doors Open Day on Sunday, September 9 between noon and 4.00 p.m.
Anne added: “We are seeking volunteers and anyone interested should come along to the garden on Tuesday evenings anytime between 6.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m - access is through the double blue gates at the east end of Ravenscraig Park.”
