A large-scale campaign to attract shoppers back to Leven town centre is delivering the goods in the run-up to Christmas.

Shop Local Leven, the scheme in which around 40 independently-run shops in the area are giving away free booklets, filled with money-saving vouchers, was hailed a success as it passed its halfway mark.

Running until December 31, the initiative was organised by Fife Council and the shopkeepers in a quest to boost the local economy and tempt people into the town to show them what it had to offer.

A number of the particpating outlets have told the Mail the move had attracted a good response and a great deal of interest from customers.

High numbers of booklets were being returned, with people keen to find out where could acquire more.

It was a good idea to keep business in the town, while “every little helps”, said the bosses.

Different shoppers were coming into the town through word of mouth and many liked the general idea of a discount scheme.

Local savings also had an appeal, while the venture was bringing people back into the High Street area and away from the retail parks.

One shop boss said: “We are really happy that the local authority is doing something to try and promote Leven.”

Hazel Cross, economic advisor with the Council, commented: “We are very pleased with the Shop Local Leven Campaign.

“In November, there were hundreds of vouchers returned and we are pleased with how the business community and the public have responded.”

Shops taking part in the scheme can be found in in High Street, Durie Street, North Street, Bridge Street, Scoonie Road, Commercial Road, Shorehead, Old Inn Wynd, Mitchell Street, Promenade, Nairn Street and Forth Street.
