Hue and cry over house exterior repaint plan

Proposals by a St Andrews householder to repaint the exterior of her home have run into opposition over the choice of colour.

The resident has lodged an application with Fife Council for a property in Lade Braes, but the plan has met with a frosty reception.

The conservation pressure group, St Andrews Preservation Trust, has joined the list of objectors to the plan to paint the facade of the property a light blue colour.

A spokesperson for the trust said: ”The planning committee has discussed the application and wishes to object to the proposed use of a very non-tradition colour on this house.

“The house, which is built in a modern design and includes UVPC windows, is already inappropriate for a conservation area, and the use of this colour will only serve to further detract from its period setting.”

The trust’s views have been echoed by other opponents and one said: ”The colour chosen is wholly inappropriate for the dwelling and its surroundings.

‘‘The property has weathered over the years. While applauding the owner for wishing to maintain the exterior of the building, the choice of colour should reflect the type of building and its surroundings.”

Other objectors also maintain that the chosen colour is “completely inappropriate for a conservation area” and should be more in keeping to that of neighbouring properties.
