Industrious idea brings back mining heritage
It’s one down, eleven to go, as Levenmouth is set to become home to familiar old coal carts once again.
One coal cart (pictured) has recently been returned to its former glory as part of an ongoing partnership between Fife Council’s Levenmouth area committee and FACET, Glenrothes, to celebrate local heritage.
Following a suggestion from former councillor Arthur Robertson, 12 coal carts were secured from the National Mining Museum at Newtongrange and brought back to Fife for refurbishment.
They will be permanently displayed in prominent locations around Levenmouth.
Chair of the Levenmouth area committee, Councillor Tom Adams said: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to carry Arthur’s idea through to link local improvement works to our history.
“When we got the carts, they had certainly seen better days.
“But now, thanks to the excellent restoration work carried out by FACET, we can see how this project will help us enhance the Levenmouth environment as well as keeping the history of mining alive in the area for generations to come.”
FACET provides training opportunities for those affected by disability and health issues.
The coal carts project is providing an opportunity for service users to get involved in researching the local mining industry while contributing to a better looking Levenmouth.
Andy Brown, woodwork instructor at FACET, said: “The guys have loved working on the carts.
“It gives them great confidence to be working on such an important project.”
