Inside Out Festival takes to the streets

St Andrews took on a carnival atmosphere as thousands of people flocked to the annual Inside Out Festival organised by the town’s Byre Theatre.
The three-day programme of street theatre and outdoor performances featuring acts from the UK and across Europe met with a tremendous response from both local residents and visitors, with many likening it to a mini Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
There was a heady mixture of dance, drama, music, fun and games in the grounds of Madras College and also Church Square, as well as impromptu performances across the town centre by others wishing to join in the extravaganza.
Helped in no small measure by some welcome summer sunshine, the large crowds enjoyed spectacular entertainment - everything from high-octane trolley ballet, trapeze acts and tennis as you’ve never seen it before, to parkour demonstrations, energetic street dance on top of and around a genuine London black cab and the grand final of the Fife’s Got Talent contest, which was won by singer Liam Vincent Kilbride, a former pupil of Madras College, who was last year’s runner-up.
The festival programme was officially launched on the lawn of the town’s secondary school by the chairman of the board of the Byre Theatre, Dr Frank Quinault, accompanied by Jacqueline McKay, the theatre’s chief executive and creative director.
Jacqueline said: ”We were thrilled to be able to programme such an exceptional standard of companies and delighted with the audience and visitor response to all the acts. The Byre has commissioned an independent evaluation and economic impact study and we look forward to gathering our visitor feedback.”
David Orr, the Byre’s marketing manager, added:”The range of acts was particularly impressive and everybody seemed to love them. The whole festival had a great atmosphere.
“The actors have all been saying how much they loved St Andrews and want to come back again.”
The international acts were also joined by a line-up of some homegrown talent, including Byre Young Dance, the Byre Youth Theatre and Byre Rhythm, who delighted with their performances.
