Is this Fife’s worst road?

AN Upper Largo man has made a claim that a road just north of the village could take the title of worst road in Fife.

The road in question connects the A915 just by Wester Newburn Farm with the A917 coast road, via Newburn, and has been almost impassable and officially closed for several months except for access.

Resident James Ogilvy said it was in an “appalling state”, with potholes on either side almost meeting in the middle in some places, and blamed “inappropriate patching” and unresolved problems with drainage.

However, in this case there is good news, with Fife Council confirming that funding had been secured to allow repair work to begin this month.

“This winter, because of the high water table, has had a really bad effect on the roads,” said Dave Smeaton, lead professional for roads network management for north Fife.

“If the water doesn’t drain and then we have freezing, that is where we get the damage and potholes.”

Progress is also being made on repair work on the B942 road to Colinsburgh, where part of the road collapsed due to severe flooding last year, resulting in temporary traffic lights being in place ever since.

Mr Smeaton said there had been ongoing discussion with the adjacent landowner and confirmation on an agreed plan of action was expected soon.

No starting date has been pencilled in as yet but Mr Smeaton said he expected it to after the start of the next financial year in April.

Fife Council has a special “Report a Road Fault” service, which can be accessed directly through the home page at www.fifedirect.org.uk or by calling 08451 55 00 11.
