James is champ - four times over!

A GLENROTHES boxer has clinched his FOURTH national title.

Jamie Dickie defeated former Scottish champion, Gary McGuire, to win the 64kg division at the Scottish Youth Championships.

In the first-round at Meadowbank Stadium McGuire, Bellahouston in Glasgow, proved how dangerous he could be by pushing forward from the start, throwing hooks and body shots in an attempt to bring about a quick finish.

But 17 year-old James kept cool under intense pressure and picked up points with a solid left jab and fast right cross - despite moving backwards he never stopped throwing leather and looked to have gone ahead on points.

In the second, McGuire tried even harder to land a telling punch, but again the Glenrothes High School pupil’s jab kept him at bay.

In fact, towards the end of the round, he was pushing McGuire back and beating him at his own game.

The third was easily won by Dickie as his opponent gradually ran out of steam and ideas and the final bell saw his arm raised in victory.

Alex McGrow, who coaches James at Kirkcaldy-based Kingdom Boxing Club, said: “Having started boxing at the age of 12, James has been in the habit of going for gold having won three Scottish titles prior to this season.

“He was only edged out in last year’s final by one point in a countback after a drawn contest with the British champion.

“But he has more than made up for that slight lapse and now looks forward to the British Championships later in the year.”
