Kicking up a stink over Methil Ming

CLAIMS from Scottish Water that there is no evidence the Methil Ming is coming from its treatment works “beggars belief”.

So says area MP Lindsay Roy, who told the Mail constituents are reporting to him that the water group is responding to complaints by telling them the infamous stench is not its fault.

Mr Roy met with Scottish Water recently following a resurgence of fresh complaints about the odour.

He said: “I have told Scottish Water there is a widespread view among the people of Levenmouth that Scottish Water is complacent in dealing with the on-going stench.

“Constituents report delays in getting feedback but, when they do, Scottish Water absolves itself of responsibility, saying it has no evidence that the noxious smells are coming from any of its sewers or treatment works.

“This beggars belief.”

Mr Roy has asked that a stakeholder meeting is called in June, involving the newly-elected councillors and other community representatives, to which Scottish Water has agreed.

Other proposals put to the firm include introducing a freephone number for the public and further investigations at the plant into possible sources, including the chimney stack and settlement tanks.

Regional community manager Anne Marie Dewar said: “We are continuing to closely monitor the facility and the local networks.

“We appreciate Mr Roy’s involvement in our regular stakeholder meetings and hope that, with his locally elected colleagues, he will continue to play a central part.

“Scottish Water and (site operator) CELTS remain committed to addressing any identified sewage-related odour issues for our customers in Levenmouth.”
