Kirkcaldy pool is on target and on budget

CONTRACTORS are on schedule to hand over the keys to Kirkcaldy’s new pool and sports centre next May.

And the doors should open to the £15m Tolbooth Street facility in July 2013, according to a report before councillors this week.

Work began at the start of the year on the former car park, and officers say everything is running to schedule, on time and on budget.

Councillors were told work was “progressing well” on site with the project “on programme”.

Taking shape

Andy MacLellan, sports partnership manager, said: “The building is now starting to take shape above ground.

“The lift shaft is complete, ground floor slab and pool deck surrounds nearly complete and construction of the steel frame started in July.”

Work underway just now also includes pool filtration, insulation below ground and drainage, while work is also on-going at the junction on the main road.

The complex will include a 25m swimming pool, a training pool, spectator area, wet-side change area, health suite including steam room and sauna, sports hall for four badminton courts, aerobics studio, play centre, 60-station gym and a cafe.

l KIRKCALDY seems to have learned from the political fall-out over the re-naming of the new Fife Institute.

Members of Kirkcaldy Area committee agreed the new pool and sports complex will simply be called ‘Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre’ – avoiding the bitter row which saw the former SNP administration push to name the Institute after the late Councillor Mike Woods.

That decision may now be reversed as the matter is to go back before Glenrothes area committee.
