Kirkcaldy’s new sports and leisure centre is really starting to take shape now the building’s frame is virtually complete.

And this week the Press got a bird’s eye view of the development from the top of the crane which dominates the town centre skyline.

Graham Construction has spent nine weeks erecting structural steel to create the outer shell of the new centre.

This operation has involved six workers and the use of a 120 tonne crane in conjunction with the site tower crane.

The shape of the 4,000 sq m building can now be seen and work has commenced on cladding work to form the outer walls of the facility.

Complete

Precast concrete has been added to the steel structure to give the building its first and second floor levels, which are now complete.

Neil Douglas, project manager, said: “It’s only really now that the frame’s in place you can fully appreciate the size and scale of the building.

“Our initial work had centred around laying foundations and creating the pool shells, which was all pretty low to the ground, but now people will see the outline of the structure and be able to imagine the finished facility a little better.

Testing

“Over the coming weeks the team will be working hard to progress with the wall and roof cladding to make the building wind and water-tight before we begin testing the pools.”

The £15.3m leisure centre will include a 25m swimming pool and a training pool with moveable floor; spectator seating for 90 people; family changing facilities; a purpose-built health suite with sauna and steam room; a 60-station gym with the latest cardiovascular and resistance equipment; an aerobics studio and four-court sports hall, as well as a children’s play area and café.

Graham Construction is on target to complete building works early next summer and hand the facility over to Fife Council ahead of its planned opening in July.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust will operate the centre on behalf of the Council.
