Kitten found abandoned in lay-by

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a three-month-old kitten was found at a lay-by in Leven, believed to have been dumped in a plastic bag.

The animal welfare charity was called to rescue the ginger and white male cat after he was spotted sitting next to the lay-by on the B927 road, connecting Leven and Cupar, about a mile out of the town.

Several ripped plastic bags lay next to the kitten and the charity’s officers believe he may have escaped from one of the bags and remained at the spot until he was rescued.

The kitten, who has been named Dougal, is now being cared for at the charity’s Angus, Tayside and Fife Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Petterden, Dundee.

Senior Inspector Steven Gray said: “We are rescuing a worryingly high number of cats and kittens that have been abandoned at the moment and it would seem Dougal is the latest victim.

“He’s an incredibly friendly wee cat, so he must have been well handled and used to human company before he found himself alone by the roadside.

“We can’t say for sure that he was dumped in a bag but it is a possibility, as there were torn bags close by. He’s lucky he wasn’t hit by a car and killed.

“If someone has left him there, that was a very cruel and heartless thing to do.”

The incident follows a number of high-profile animal neglect cases in Fife recently.

Last month, a kitten was found dumped in a bin near Cowdenbeath and, in May, a Thornton woman was banned from keeping animals for life after she admitted causing a pony unnecessary suffering. His hooves were so overgrown, vets were forced to put him down.

Anyone with information about Dougal is urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
