Labour: Kirkcaldy needs real leadership

bringing back real political leadership to help revive Kirkcaldy’s tired town centre is what David Ross would like to see in the forthcoming election.
And he believes that, although the days of the old town centres are in the past, there is still plenty that can be done to make Kirkcaldy a place which people really want to visit.
“It is all about putting the heart back into the town and creating real pride again,” he explained.
“Time after time we have heard promises of fancy schemes that never come to fruition, and part of that problem is a lack of proper leadership which is necessary for the overall good of the town.

“Yes, there have been some piecemeal things done and some town centre organisations are working on improving the situation, but we need a real joined up approach.
‘‘The Council can’t do it all itself, but it can bring people together to work in the same direction and help to drive forward change and regeneration of the town.”
And the subject is something David (58), knows a bit about, having worked for 26 years in local government, almost 20 of them in Fife in corporate planning and policy.
Another local hot potato is the subject of care homes, something he is passionate about.
“With the population of Fife living much longer the question of how we look after our older and vulnerable people is something which must be addressed,” he explained.
“We need to be prepared, and Labour in Fife is committed to building a replacement for Appin House and Raith Gates Care Homes.
“We want to look at some form of community care co-operative where the Council could work in partnership with charities and other non-profit making bodies which could draw in funding from outside sources to help finance projects.
“The important thing would be that the local authority would still have control over the standards in these homes to ensure the best level of care is given by the best staff,” he said.
And another of the local burning issues which has arisen during his election campaign has been that of transportation, including bus services, particularly to Victoria Hospital and local health centres.
“We need to sit down and look at how services can be delivered better,” he said.
“We would look into making some kind of municipal transport organisation, either through the Council or working with the voluntary sector to deliver a better service.”
