Legionella discovered at Cupar care home

Fife Council has confirmed a recent discovery of legionella at Cupar’s North Eden care home has been dealt with.

The Fife Herald understands that higher than normal levels of the bacteria were found in the water supply at the local authority owned home.

Fife Council’s head of older people service, Louise Bell, confirmed the incident occurred in mid-May.

She said: “We can confirm that following a regular routine inspection, higher than normal levels of legionella bacteria were detected in the water supplying some of the baths at North Eden care home.

“Immediate action was taken and the situation has since been resolved.

“When we were notified of the bacteria levels we immediately put into place precautionary measures which were communicated to staff, residents and their families.

“Drinking water was unaffected and residents were able to continue using baths.

“A short break in using showers was necessary to enable the fitting of anti-legionella shower heads and disinfection.

“The care and well being of residents is paramount which is why we carry out regular inspections and we continue to meet and exceed the Health and Safety Executive’s Guidance.

According to the HSE website, if conditions permit the legionella bacteria to grow it can increase the risk of legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia.
