Leslie in line for Carbuncle ‘award’?

LESLIE has been nominated for a notorious award.

The town has been put up to receive an Urban Realm Carbuncle, set-up by the magazine of the same name to recognise the most dismal places and spaces in Scotland - and, organisers hope, prompt action to be taken to improve the situation.

The awards regularly cause outrage among communities who take offence at the nominations, as happened when Glenrothes won the Carbuncle Trophy in 2009.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “With our towns under greater financial and demographic pressure than ever before there has never been a more auspicious time to shine a light on Scotland’s darkest urban blackspots.”

He added that the town’s nominated included “harbour a variety of ills”, in Leslie’s case citing the open cast quarry which has been the source of so much controversy in the town recently.

But the spokesman admitted that there must be worse places than the town and others so far put forward, including Newmills in Ayrshire and Broxburn in West Lothian and said that it was by no means certain that Leslie would make the shortlist in December.
