Halfords Tour Series, Kirkcaldy

Halfords Tour Series, Kirkcaldy

THE Halfords Tour Race Series could return to Kirkcaldy next year with organisers and cyclists delighted by the support they received from the town on their first visit.

While a full evaluation of the Kirkcaldy race is not likely to take place until mid-July once the Tour series is completed, the organisers have indicated they would like to return in 2013.

Around 3000 people lined the town centre circuit for the opening race in the series – the first to be held in Scotland – and the enthusiasm of the crowd and the support of the event partners has encouraged the Tour to consider the possibility of spending a week in Scotland next year, with two races taking place.

Peter Hodges, the Tour series PR manager, said: “It would be nice to think about a return to Kirkcaldy next year and possibly adding another Scottish venue.”

The Tour was put in touch with Fife Council by the national agency Event Scotland, and described the local authority as “pro-active and passionate” in its desire to stage the event. Kirkcaldy4All was also influential in bringing the race to the town.

Bill Harvey, of Kirkcaldy4All, said, personally, he would love to see the race returning.

Positive

“All the people involved in bringing the race to Kirkcaldy are going to have a ‘wash-up’ meeting, where we’ll look at what was successful and what could have been better,” he said. “However, the general feedback appears to be positive.”

“When you consider we were only allocated the race in January, it was a tremendous effort to put it all together in just four months. Obviously it would be a bit easier should there be a next time having done it before.”

Kirkcaldy MSP David Torrance has put a motion before the Scottish Parliament congratulating Kirkcaldy on staging the first Halfords Tour race in Scotland.

Grant Ward, head of Fife Council’s leisure and cultural services, said early feedback suggested the event was well received..

He said the outcome of the full evaluation would inform any decisions the Council might make about further support for the event should it return to the town.
