Leven set for town surgery
RESIDENTS, visitors and workers in Leven are to be given their say on the future of the town centre next week.
Fife Council has organised for a drop-in surgery to take place in Leven Library between 2.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.
Willie Miller Urban Design (WMUD) has been commissioned to carry out the surgery as part of an urban design study of the area.
Results will be used to help plan refurbishment, improvement and potential development opportunities over the next 10 years.
Mr Miller said: “We want to ensure that we have a clear understanding of how the key streets and spaces of the town centre are used and how they connect to the rest of the town, what works particularly well and shouldn’t be altered - and what local residents and business feel are problems areas where changes might be made.
“We also want to discuss some ideas for ways in which the town’s principal areas - Shorehead, High Street and the Promenade - could be used in the future.”
The move comes at a time when the town’s High Street area, in particular, has been criticised for a lack of choice and atmosphere. Business owners have showed a willingness to improve the centre but many recently pointed the finger of blame at councillors for making life even harder, by approving an application for Tesco to build a supermarket next to Sainsbury’s at the Riverside Retail Park.
Councillor Tom Adams, chair of the Levenmouth Area Committee however added: “Supporting Leven town centre is a key objective of the Levenmouth Plan.
“Improving the quality and function of the town for residents, workers and visitors is something that needs to be planned and getting input from local people is vital to that.
“Please use this opportunity to make your views known.”
The session will be informal and will use maps, plans, post-it notes and a questionnaire to collect information.
Everybody with an interest in the town centre is welcome to attend at any point during the scheduled time.
