Levenmouth bin fires on the increase

THE number of incidents of wheelie bin fires in Levenmouth has increased by more than half in the past year – prompting one councillor to ask for more to be done.
Speaking at last Wednesday’s Levenmouth area committee meeting, Cllr John O’Brien cited statistics showing incidents increased from 120 in 2010/11, to 183 in 2011/12 – a rise of 52.5 per cent.
Chief Inspector Graeme Kinmond, who delivered his monthly ‘operational briefing’ at the meeting, confirmed Cllr O’Brien was correct and added that Levenmouth seemed to have more of a problem than other areas.
He said: “We buck the trend in Levenmouth. Other areas are reducing, we seem to be increasing.
“These are random fires, I think out of boredom and looking for the excitement of the fire service arriving.
“We are as robust as we can when we get information about these.”
CI Kinmond added police in Levenmouth are working closely with Fife Fire and Rescue Service, particularly over an education programme in schools, and are looking at ways to reduce the number of wheelie bins at blocks of flats to tackle the issue.
Cllr O’Brien highlighted an incident at Erskine Court, Methil, last week where wheelie bins were set on fire and suggested a pilot scheme should be trialled using communal bins for residents, instead of everyone having individual ones .
He added: “The cost of the clean up operation with the fire service is a huge inconvenience.”
CI Kinmond confirmed a 20-year-old man had since appeared in court on petition over the incident at Erskine Court.
