Local pubs the Best Bar None!
A number of pubs and bars in Kirkcaldy are celebrating after receiving an award for having responsible management and safe premises.
Among the winners of the gold Best Bar None awards in Kirkcaldy were Betty Nicols, Kitty’s and Kandy, Styx, O’Connel’s and The Exchequer. Lloyds No. 1 received a bronze award.
The Best Bar None scheme is led by Fife Police, with support from partners including Fife Fire and Rescue and Environmental Services Trading Standards department.
The initiative looks to reward licensed premises for the promotion of responsible management and operation and aims to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder in town centres by building up positive relationships between the licensed premises, local police and local authorities.
Stephen Brown, manager of The Exchequer, said: “We were delighted to be named overall gold winners in the bar category of Fife’s Best Bar None programme.
“We’ve entered every year since the scheme began and have been awarded silver and bronze, but this is the first time we’ve been awarded gold.
“Winning the award is testament to everyone at the Exchequer who plays a vital role in creating a safe, friendly and happy environment for customers and staff.”
Elaine Thomson, bar manger at Betty Nicols pub, said: “We’re happy with the award. We’ve been doing it for the last few years and got silver in 2010, but every other year we’ve had gold.”
“We feel that we’re the kind of pub where a single woman could come in on her own and feel safe.
“We do that through good customer service and providing a relaxed atmosphere for people to come to.”
Ashley Kellock, Scottish co-ordinator for Best Bar None, commented: “This is a brilliant result for each of the winners and for Fife itself.
“It means that locals and visitors in the area can be assured of a warm welcome and a safe night out if they choose one of these award winning venues.”
Sergeant David Hayes from Fife Police Community Planning and Equalities department said, “These awards afford the Police Service great opportunity to work in partnership with licensed premises for each area and together we can work towards providing a safer environment, both for the general public and all of the staff concerned.”
