Lochgelly needs its Post Office

KIrkcaldy MP Gordon Brown has demanded Lochgelly gets its Post Office back immediately.

The former PM has written to the company’s chief executive calling for the immediate restoration of the service following its sudden closure last month.

The branch at 76 Main Street shut on February 12 following the resignation of the subpostmaster - and although the Post Office has reported parties are interested in re-opening it, Mr Brown has expressed concern that not enough is being done to restore services quickly and the effect its closure is having on the town’s elderly population.

He said: “I am pleased that the Post Office is currently seeking a new provider and have had a couple of expressions of interest to deliver services in Lochgelly, so it does look as if the service will be replaced.

“We were promised further options and I hope that we now have new options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community.”

Mr Brown said he had been in talks with Fife Council over the issue and that there was a possibility of other premises being used in the interim period. He said: “Perhaps we should look at the use of the Lochgelly Centre.

“What is important for older people especially is that the service is restored immediately and that they do not have to travel miles for their needs to be met”

A Post Office spokesman said: “The closure was due to the resignation of the sub-postmaster and the withdrawal of current premises. We are currently working with parties who have shown an interest in running the Post Office in Lochgelly. We remain committed to re-establishing a Post Office service in Lochgelly.’’
