Long delays expected on bridge over four weekends

FIFE motorists are facing delays over the Forth Bridge in April and May.
Major resurfacing work is being carried out over four weekends as part of the Forth replacement crossing project.
And it starts next weekend.
Work to provide access for emergency repairs on the bridge will also be completed at the same time as routine maintenance scheduled every Saturday and Sunday morning from April 21-22 through to October 20-21.
Traffic on the bridge will be restricted to a single lane in both directions from first light until 10.30 a.m. on these weekends.
However, on the weekends of April 21-22, April 28-29, May 5-6 and May 12-13, major resurfacing works will be carried out on the M90 to the north of the bridge- and Transport Scotland is advising motorists to avoid using this route if possible.
After the M90 works are completed, early morning restrictions on the bridge are only expected to cause moderate delays between around 9.30 and 11.00 a.m. on Saturdays.
Barry Colford, chief engineer and bridgemaster, said: “By learning from the success of the work we’ve carried out to date we’ve been able to refine our processes and are now confident that we can complete the job in a shorter timescale.
‘‘Increased daylight hours will also allow us to begin work earlier.
“This means extended weekend traffic restrictions will not be necessary.”
