A petition containing 93 signatures calling for the installation of a pelican crossing close to John Dixon Park in Markinch is to be presented to councillors.

Members of the Glenrothes area committee will consider the request when they meet today, (Wednesday).

Patricia Duzinkewycz, treasurer of the Parents and Friends of Markinch Primary School and Nursery group is to make a presentation to councillors outlining reasons behind the request.

In a submission document sent to the area committee the group highlights the need for a traffic light crossing, to stop the traffic, in Balbirnie Street at the entrance to John Dixon Park.

While the stretch of the B9130 currently has a 20 mph restriction, the group say it has experienced many motorists ignoring the speed limit.

The petition has been supported by Sandra Forbes, former head teacher of Markinch Primary School, as the school regularly uses the park for recreational purposes.

Campaigners are now hopeful their campaign for a crossing, which started in 2010 will be successful.
