Motorists on mobiles drive me mad
Cllr Jim Young
THE scourge of drivers using their mobile phones is frustrating a local councillor.
Police officers catching anybody using a mobile whilst driving have the power to issue a fixed penalty notice of a fine and penalty points.
But this still doesn’t deter some motorists who continue to call or text while behind the wheel.
Speaking at Wednesday’s meeting of Levenmouth area committee councillors, Councillor Jim Young said he was growing sick of the amount of drivers he saw flouting the laws of the road.
He said: “If there is one thing that really annoys me it’s drivers sitting talking on their phones.
“There has to be something more we can do about it.”
In response, Chief Inspector Graeme Kinmond told the committee that officers are currently actively being urged to keep an eye out for careless drivers of this kind.
He added that those caught were risking a three point penalty.
The chief inspector said: “It’s still a problem.
“We are trying to deal with it and recently had one officer issue 17 notices for road offences.”
