Move to set up car-sharing scheme in Cupar

AN environmentally-friendly group is hoping that people ‘tyred out’ with rising petrol prices and Cupar’s congested streets, may be in favour of a new car-sharing scheme.

Sustainable Cupar is holding an event in the YMCA next Thursday at 7.30pm to discuss the possibility of setting up a car-sharing club in Cupar.

Car clubs provide a pool of cars that people can hire for occasional use, for periods as short as an hour and, for anyone who drives less than 6000-8000 miles per year, it can prove a cheaper alternative to owning a car.

Spokesperson Susan Horsman said: “Some journeys can only realistically be made by car.

“However, if these trips are made infrequently, using a car club may be a cheaper option than running a car.

“With the congestion and pollution problems in Cupar, a local car club could be a useful tool to help to address these problems and improve local air quality.”

Susan went on: “This could also offer benefits in neighbourhoods with limited parking, as car clubs can reduce the demand for parking spaces.”

With a car club recently launched in Anstruther, Fife Council, Carplus and Sustainable Cupar are looking at the feasibility of setting one up in Cupar.

The event, held in conjunction with Carplus. will give residents the chance to find out more about how car clubs work, and discuss whether Cupar would benefit from one.

Anyone interested in using a car club but who is unable to make the meeting can complete a short survey, which can be found at Cupar Library or County Buildings.
