Mystery of stone head dug up in Cupar

A CUPAR couple were left baffled in June when they dug up an ugly stone head at the bottom of their garden.
Six months later, and despite seeking advice from some of the country’s top experts, Donald and Rosalind McIntyre are still none the wiser about the mysterious artefact.
Now the St Michaels Drive pair are hoping Fife Herald readers might be able to shed some light on their find.
Rosalind said: “We found the head when we were digging our garden in June.
“I had been moving it about because I thought it was just a boulder, but then Donald said it had a face on it.
“So I took it inside, cleaned the moss off and revealed this ugly looking head.”
She went on: “Our sons took it to a museum in St Andrews and the people there were astonished — they said they thought it was very, very old.
“They then sent it around various places but no-one could find out anything about it, although Historic Scotland are still looking into it.
“We’ve now got the head back, but we’d be interested to know what it is and we hope Fife Herald readers might be able to help.”
